warriorsxnsd.proboards105.com/index.cgi?board=camp&action=display&thread=1201475498Darksong wasn't nearly as enthusiastic as Ashpaw about going hunting. He found it....boring to say the least. It was just one of those things he had to do. "Alright then, follow me." He told Ashpaw, then began heading out of camp. He glanced back to check if she was following. Darksong led Ashpaw up into the forest. He sat down in the shade of a tree, sighed, and gave his chest a lick. He waited impatiently for his apprentice to appear. [/color]

Ashpaw followed Darksong into the forest eager to start helping her clan. She walked through the forest trying to take in every sound and sight, her eyes gleaming brightly at the vastness of it. She looked at Darksong enthusiastically, "So, how do I start?"

Darksong licked his paw lazily. He then noticed that Ashpaw had spoken to him, so he stood up and tasted the air. He then turned to her and asked, "Do you scent any prey?" He was already bored and kept telling himself to be as patient as possible with Ashpaw. Darksong really had hardly any idea about what he was doing. Patchstar is defiantly out of his mind if he thinks I can mentor!

Ashpaw opened her mouth to taste the air. At first she could only smell her own scent and that of Darksong, but then she caught a wiff of something else.
"I smell a mouse!" She exclaimed.
Almost as soon as she said it she realized she had probably scared the mouse or any other prey away. She looked at her paws afraid her mentor would be angry.
"Er... sorry."

Darksong shook his head, his patience seeping out of him. He sighed heavily and said, "....just watch and keep quiet while I catch something." He tasted the air; yes the mouse was defiantly gone. He caught a fairly fresh scent of vole, and nodded for Ashpaw to follow him as he followed the scent.
He crouched down, spotting his prey nearby. He slowly crept forward, careful not to make too much noise with all the fallen leaves around. Darksong pounced, and killed the vole with ease.

Ashpaw stared in awe as Darksong killed the vole swiftly.
"Let me try again,"
She spoke in a whisper, she didn't want to scare away any more prey. Without waiting for Darksong to reply she opened her mouth to taste the air, for a moment she didn't smell anything so shewaited patientky until she caught the scent of another vole. She looked around until she saw it looking for seeds on the forest floor, and dropped into a hunting crouch, trying to copy Darksong as best she could and slowly and silently crept toward the mouse. She then leaped, she thought she had been quick but when her paws hit the ground there was nothing but dead leaves.
"That was better at least, right?"
She asked Darksong, she was determined not to show her growing frustration, her first hunt was not anything like she had hoped for.

Darksong buried the vole, being sure to mentally note where it was. He then watched Ashpaw track another vole. For a moment, it looked as though she would have it. The vole was gone when she pounced.
"Better but...." He explained harshly, "The vole most likely scented you. You need to be sure you are downwind from your prey, and move quickly!"
Darksong sighed heavily, knowing that he only had a few grains of his patience left. 'Please don't let me harm this kit....please...' He prayed. "Follow me, I scent a mouse closeby." Darksong said once he had calmed down. He led Ashpaw towards the scent. Once he spotted the mouse he nodded to Ashpaw, signaling her to try again.

Ashpaw spotted the mouse Darksong had mentioned immedietly. She dropped into a hunting crouch and noted that the wind was in her favor. Good, she thought, maybe I can actually catch this one! She waited until the mouse came just a little closer, then quickly and lightly she leaped onto the mouse and killed it with one swift bite to the neck. She almost leaped with excitement,
"Did you see that, I caught my first mouse!"
She almost leaped up and down in her glee, but then thought better of it and tried to calm herself down, she didn't want Darksong to think she was just another over-eager apprentice.

Darksong watched Ashpaw stalk the mouse apprehensively. He nearly leaped out of his pelt when he saw her catch it. He then calmed, scolding himself for getting excited over a silly kit catching a mouse. He couldn't help but be proud of his apprentice, and of himself.
"That's great." Darksong told Ashpaw, with no emotion at all in his voice, "Let's see what else we can find...." He then led her to a different spot not all that far away.

Ashpaw felt as if she was going to burst with pride, her eyes gleamed at her mentors praise (even if he didn't sound as excited as her.) She followed him to a different part of the forest and then pricked her ears, listening for sounds of prey and opened her mouth to taste the air. She could smell the scent of squirrel, but it was stale. Then she caught the fresher scent of a vole. She quickly pin pointed the scent, and saw the voles fur, barely visible against the leaves on the forest floor. She dropped into a hunting crouch and kept perfectly still. She did not even twitch her whiskers, she did not want to scare away another piece of prey. She kept her eyes on the vole as it crept closer to her, and then, just as the wind shifted, she leapt at it. The vole didn't scent her until her paws were almost on it, and though it tried to escape, she was to quick for it. She swiftly killed it and then looked back to Darksong.
That's a mouse AND a vole, and it's only my first time!
She knew Darksong already knew both these things and that she was boasting, but her excitement got the better of her, and she could barely keep herself from jumping up and down.

As soon as Darksong saw that Ashpaw had scented something, he turned the other direction and tasted the air. A mouse was nearby. He spotted it only a few tail-lengths away. Darksong crept forward as slowly and carefully as he could. Then it happened. Crunch! He stepped down hard on a dry leaf, and the mouse scurried away. Darksong cursed, then went back to see how Ashpaw had done.
The apprentice had done better than him.
He smirked when he saw the vole she had killed, "Well, you've done better than me today, I'll give you that." Darksong said, "I just lost a mouse to a crunchy leaf!" He hated hunting, mostly because he was so bad at it. Yet, he made up for it by being an excellent fighter.

Ashpaw felt herself glowing with pride. She opened her mouth to taste the air, but instead of prey she smelled something else. "What is that, it smells disgusting!" Almost before she ahd finished the quesiton an animal slightly larger then the cat with huge paws and a striped face burst through the undergrowth. It growled vicously and raised it's huge claws, slashing them violently into the air. Ashpaw let out a shriek, a voice inside her head screeched at her to run, but she was rooted to the grown. She looked at DArksong, hoping he would know what to do.

Darksong scented the air at Ashpaw's words. Badger!, he thought when he smelled it. He was right. Moments later, an anger badger appeared. Darksong's heart was beating fast. How he could possibly take a badger on his own? He did have Ashpaw, but assumed she would be of little help. "Stay back!" He instructed her.
Darksong then unsheathed his claws and leaped up onto the badger. He slashed at it's face, aiming at its eyes. The beast threw the tom off nearly effortlessly, and moved to bite him. Darksong quickly got behind the badger and pounced onto its back. He gripped its back tightly with his claws, and sunk his teeth into the beast's neck. It called out in pain, and Darksong was again flung off its back.

Ashpaw watched in terror, her mouth was wide open and she no longer felt quite so arrogant. She took a few pawsteps back at Darksong's instructions, but did not tear her eyes away from the raging battle between Darksong and the enormous badger. She then look around the forest, wondering if she should go get help, and then sniffed the air, hoping to detect the scent of another cat, but the ugly scent of the badger masked everything else.

Darksong sat on the ground, panting heavily. He looked over at Ashpaw. She was terrified. The badger began to come at him, and he was getting to worn out to even move. A familiar scent then came to him, but he couldn't place what it was. He turned to look, and was shocked at who he saw.
An orange and brown tabby stepped out behind Darksong. He slowly padded over between him and the badger, keeping his eyes fixed on the badger's. He hissed and threatened the creatures face with his claws.
Darksong stood up, his wounds aching. He padded up beside the rouge tom and hissed at the badger. He was relieved to see it back off and disappear back into the forest.
