Apprentices. Could the cats BE any lazier? Rainclaw was positive she was never that lazy when she was an apprentice. She did her work, and it payed off. She was in great shape, and was a great warrior. She never complained when a warrior asked her to clean the elders dens.
But not this generation of cats, oh no. These apprentices complained whenever anyone asked them to raise a paw! All the she-cat asked them to do was clear out the elders old bedding [which, for some reason they had stuffed in a corner of the den] but nooooo, it just couldn't be done. Her mother had complained multiple times, and Rainclaw had to ask twice until one of the young cats had actually done something.
So that's why she wasn't hunting. Rainclaw wanted to be positive that those mouse-brained fools would actually get their work done. She'd even cut them some slack, she only yelled for a few seconds. That was nothing compared to what Carmeltail would say. Her mother would probably not stop talking until they finished. That was punishment in itself.
Rainclaw was currently looking around to see what needed to be done. The patrols were running smoothly, and the deputy and leader seemed to be no where around camp. She shivered, it was getting chilly. Leafbare was coming, she was sure. By then these apprentices would really know how hard it was during that season. Or at least she hoped they would learn.
Rainclaw stretched her paws out and let loose a yawn. Although she wasn't that tired, she was a bit sleepy. But she couldn't sleep. There were apprentices to babysit.

Darksong just sat alone, watching cats go back and forth doing chores and such. He just sat there, bored out of his skull. What am I suppose to be doing today anyway? He thought. Oh, right, I have one of those apprentice THINGS. Where's she at? Lazy furball! Darksong glanced around and didn't spot Ashpaw. He growled, then began pacing through camp, making it look like he was doing something.
Darksong got bored of that quickly and sat just outside the Warriors' den. What's Mothflight doing today anyway? He thought, Nah, I don't need him for entertainment....
Then he spotted Rainclaw. A shiver went through his pelt. Darksong then got tense, glancing around to see if anyone had seen that. Not a soul was looking in his direction. He relaxed.
Restlessness caused Darksong to get up and move elsewhere again. He purposely walked past Rainclaw and kicked some dirt at her as he passed. He then laid down a few tail lengths away, being sure to NOT look back at her.

Rainclaw sat with nothing to do. She pushed the dirt at her feet around and created a little castle with it. But, realizing her kitish behavior she quickly distroyed it. She was not a hypocrite.
She looked up, and saw Darksong. She smiled for a millisecond but then her face turned to frown again. She looked away, hoping he hadn't seen her look at him. From the corner of her eye she saw movement, he was walking towards her! She got excited but continued to stare at the ground.
But then, he kicked dirt in her face. On purpose! She coughed and turned to face him, "Hey! What do you think you're doing!" she yowled.

Darksong merely sat their, lazily cleaning his pelt. He only half listened to Rainclaw's yowling. He sighed heavily, then spoke without even turning to look at her, "Stop your whining. You sound like a mouse-brained kit!" He said, knowing it would strike a nerve, "I only walked past you." Darksong smirked, enjoying her anger towards him.

"Stop your whining. You sound like a mouse-brained kit!"
This stopped Rainclaw in her thoughts. It was if the whole world had stopped. All emotion flew from her face.
"Excuse me?" Rainclaw said. "Kit? KIT? I don't think you realize what you just said."
How dare he get off with calling ME a kit! The nerve! she thought. She scowled.
"I only walked past you"
Rainclaw raised her eyebrows. "Ok, so you're telling me that the dirt that was thrown in my face was a sign from StarClan?" she meowed.

This time, Darksong actually got up and turned to her, "I know exactly what I said, and I meant it!" He hissed.
He laughed at her remark about 'a sign from Starclan', "Yes, Starclan was trying to tell you to stop acting like a whiny kit all the time." He said, matter-of-factly.

"Yes, Starclan was trying to tell you to stop acting like a whiny kit all the time."
What's his problem? Honestly, does he take me for a kit? Because it's really annoying! Rainclaw scowled some more. She turned to wards him and looked him straight in the eyes, "At least I actually do some work, unlike some apprentices around here," she said, changing to subject.
No offense Darksong, but I'd prefer for you not to make fun of me this entire conversation, she added in her mind.

Darksong chuckled under his breath at Rainclaw's words, "Yeah, I guess so. You're better than some of the apprentices." The first apprentice that came to mind was Ashpaw, his own. She was ok, but a bit of a pansy. He both hated her and liked her at the same time, kinda like.....
NO! I don't like Rainclaw!
He shook the thought from his mind as quickly as it came. Darksong then said, "What have you been doing all day anyway? Complaining about the apprentices?" He thought his prediction was most likely correct.

"Yeah, I guess so. You're better than some of the apprentices."
"Hah! These apprentices wouldn't lift a paw unless you asked them to!" She meowed. But then- Was it really happening? The thing so unseen from most [besides Rippedheart]. There, along her mouth emerged a smile.
Rainclaw paused, confused.
Wait, did I just smile? Why would I smile? I don't like this cat!
"What have you been doing all day anyway? Complaining about the apprentices?"
Rainclaw looked towards the fresh kill pile, "I hunted, and I'm planning on partroling at dawn," she said.

Darksong actually smiled back at Rainclaw as he replied, "Well, my apprentice isn't too bad. She's quite the pansy sometimes though..."
He was very jealous that she would be allowed to go out, "I have to sit around here all day because of a stupid badger and a pansy apprentice." He said as he nodded towards his torn open flank. It hadn't healed much at all.

"Well, my apprentice isn't too bad. She's quite the pansy sometimes though..."
She laughed, "Yes, Ashpaw is quite the pansy," she meowed. "But at lease she's not a sarcastic idiot like Jaypaw," Rainclaw added. Her apprentice liked to be 'funny' but 'funny' was something he was not, or at least in Rainclaw's eyes.
"I have to sit around here all day because of a stupid badger and a pansy apprentice
"HAH!" Rainclaw laughed, wondering about the badger. "Did you kill it?" Rainclaw realized that she sounded stupid. "I mean, the badger." Then she noticed his wound. "That looks painful," she meowed sympathetically.

At this point, Darksong realized something. Weren't we just fighting moments ago? How'd that happen?! He didn't think much else of it.
"No, just scared it off." He told her, leaving out the fact that he had help, "It doesn't hurt too much. Looks worse than it feels." Darksong said aobut his wound. He hardly ever admitted if something hurt him, but he was playing down the amount of pain.

"No, just scared it off."
"That's good. I'll look for it when I'm on patrol," she looked at the sun to see about when she had to get going. She still had awhile.
"It doesn't hurt too much. Looks worse than it feels."
Rainclaw giggled at his though guy act. Suddenly, her stomach grumbled and she realized she hadn't had anything to eat for awhile. She looked at the fresh kill pile, it was lower than it was last time she looked. She frowned, "Apprentices must have eaten all the good stuff," she meowed. "Hey, you say it doesn't hurt that much. Would you be up for hunting?" Rainclaw could barley believe her ears. She'd just asked him to go hunting. Wow.

Darksong stood up and looked around. He was looking to see if Ashpaw or Arcticpool were around. No sign of them. Only they knew he wasn't suppose to leave camp. "Sure." He simply replied, completely forgetting that he had made fun of her only moments ago. He had had only one day of sitting around at camp, and he was already tired of it. Even though he hated hunting, the prospect of being out of camp was enough to sway him. And maybe being with Rainclaw had helped him decide too.....

"Sure."
"Alright, lets go then," she said and hurried padded out of camp, unaware that Darksong wasn't suppossed to leave camp.
