Darksong had been dreading this. He didn't even want to mentor to begin with, and now he was teaching his pansy apprentice how to fight. He felt it was a completely hopeless cause, and his gait as he led his apprentice to the sands reflected that. His amber eyes glanced around to see if any other cats were watching. No one. He sighed heavily and sat down in the cold sand.

Ashpaw didn't notice that Darksog seemed less than thrilled to be teaching her how to fight. She was just excited to be out training and learning how to become a better warrior. Although she did not enjoy the feel of sand beneath her toes she was glad none the less to be out training, even in the chill of winter.
She followed Darksong closely, almost skipping, and stayed standing when he sat down, her dark pelt a strong contrast with the light sand. "So, how do we start?" she asked enthusiastically. That was Ashpaw, always the optimist, and now it was time for DArksong to deal with her.

Darksong looked at Ashpaw, his eyes unenthusiastic. He was not the least bit excited about doing this. He smirked and said, "Try and attack me." The black tom continued to sit in the same spot, completely relaxed. He knew Ashpaw wouldn't cause him the least bit of harm, or be able to surprise him. "Claws sheathed." He added.

"Um... okay." Ashpaw tried to remember what she had learner from Snowsong that one day when she had helped Ashpaw with her training as she focused on the best way to attack Darksong. She took her time in figuring it out, and the began to sprint to wards him. She focused her eyes on his face, but when she leaped, she aimed for his back. Maybe if she could land on his back she could throw him off balance...

Darksong yawned as he watched Ashpaw think about what to do. He was one of the best fighters in the clan, but he knew his apprentice would be difficult to teach. As she sprinted towards him, he waited. When she leapt, he simply took a step to the side. He knew she wouldn't be quick enough to turn and get him.

Darksong was right; Ashpaw was too slow. Her leap landed her in the sand, only slightly dissapointed. Her paws sunk in the sand as she struggled to regain her balance. Darksong may have been a great fighter; but Ashpaw, well, she wasn't. "I think I missed."
Well of course she missed, it was pretty obvious, but Ashpaw still felt the need to point it out. She stood straight up and looked at Darksong, waiting for his response to her failed attempt.

Darksong chuckled, "Of course you missed. You can't just barrel into someone like that. You have to be ready to change your attack plan in a split second." He explained, hoping she would get that. "Rarely will you fight a target who doesn't move." He then stood about 2 tail-lengths away and said, "Try again."

Ashpaw nodded, okay, be ready to change attack plan at any moment. How did one do that? She began to form a plan in her head, she would charge at him and then... what if he moved? She would just have to be ready for that. Okay, charge and be ready to switch direction at any moment. That was the best she could come up with.
She narrowed her eyes at Darksong, focusing on his face, and then charged. Her feet were quick, but she slowed down a little so she could have more time to change direction if needed. Maybe she could do this after all...

Darksong watched his apprentice plan in her head what she was going to do. For a moment, he thought about just letting her attack him, and not even putting up much of a fight. That was what other mentors would do. Then again, what good would that do Ashpaw? None at all.
As she came towards him again Darksong lept right at her, hoping that he would pounce right over her, which would cause her to miss again. That is, unless she could switch tactics quick enough to catch him in mid air.

Ashpw skidded to a halt, not sure what to do when DArksong was coming straight for her. As he sailed over her head she whirled around, with no particular plan in mind. Without thinking, she lept at Darksong, paws outsretched in his direction, having no clue what she would do if he suddenly moved like he had a tendancy to do.

Darksong was surprised that Ashpaw was quick enough to change her direction and leap in his direction. He did not suddenly move again like she thought he would, for when he landed back in the sand his old badger wound stung. It gave Ashpaw a small window to take advantage of.
((ooc: Holy crap that was hard to get those 3 sentences XD))

Ashpaw was about to leap on Darksong's back when she stopped short. He hadn't moved as she had expected, and she had a perfect window to attack. Most apprentices would have thrived at this point, but Ashpaw was not most apprentices, and she was at a sudden loss. "What do I do now?" Ashpaw had trained with Snowsong before, but she had never actually gotten close enough to the fake attacker to attack them...

Darksong rolled his eyes and laid down in the sand, "This is officially hopeless..." he murmured. "Don't waste time thinking about what to do. Just do it. If you sit there and think all day you'll get torn to pieces!" He then stood up, completely alert, and glanced around. He needed a way to teach Ashpaw, but how?
Then he saw Mothflight sitting a few tail lengths away. He was watching them with a smirk on his face. Darksong turned to Ashpaw and said, "Wait here..." then he padded over to Mothflight.
"This is quite entertaining." Mothflight said, "You don't have any idea what you're doing, do you?"
"No..." Darksong hissed, "Could you come help me out here? She's too stupid to get anything about fighting. It's frustrating."
Mothflight stood up and stretched. "Fine."
The two brothers then walked back over to Ashpaw. Mothflight had yet another smirk on his face, comparing Ashpaw to Nightpaw in his mind. He was confident Nightpaw would be much better at fighting than her. He could throw that in Darksong's face later. "Did you ever even playfight as a kit?" Mothflight said, chuckling a bit under his breath.

Ashpaw tilted her head in thought, trying to think of what she had done with the other kits in the nursery. She could not specifically remember fighting with the other kits. "Sometimes we wrestled, and once I squashed a spider. Does that count?" She didn't see how any of that was relevant now. "But that was just playing. This is real...ish" Her head tilted carefull, she waited for an explanation as to how wrestling with kits and squashing spiders could help improve her fighting skills.

Both toms couldn't believe what she said. "Wow." Was all Darksong could say as he shook his head at her. Play-fighting and wrestling was just about all Darksong and Mothflight did when they were young. It was strange to think Ashpaw hadn't, but it wasn't surprising.
"Watch and learn.." Mothflight said, then leapt onto Darksong.
They rolled about in the sand for a bit, Mothflight nipping at his brother's ears. Darksong shoved him off, then swept a paw towards his face. Mothflight dodged his hit and leapt at Darksong's back. He clung to him with his claws and sunk his teeth into the new scar on his flank.
Darksong yowled and threw him off again, then sat in the sand panting. Mothflight smiled and told Ashpaw, "Looking for your opponent's weak point and attacking it is always a good strategy."
