The juiciest vole she had seen in moons sat scuffling in the dust barely a tail's length away. Swiftflame silently thanked Starclan that they were downwind, and that the vole was occupied by an ant scuttling on the ground beneath it. "Perhaps this will bring Arcticpool into higher spirits..." Swiftflame thought. However, Arcticpool's moods were not the only thing troubling Swiftflame's mind. Where was Moonwhisker? She had been right behind her when she left camp. Swiftflame shook her head sharply. She couldn't let her mind wander, not while she was so close to such a fabulous catch! Swiftflame was just about to take her first stealthy paw step, carefully avoiding crunching the autumn leaves on the ground, when she realized that Ashpaw had scented the vole as well. "Maybe I should let her catch this one" Swiftflame thought. She had not yet had a chance to see the apprentice display her hunting skills. Swiftflame backed lightly away signaling with her tail that the apprentice should make the catch.

Ashpaw had been watching Swiftflame intently, hoping that she could learn by watching, but when the flame-colored cat signaled for her to go for she nodded her head and blinked her eyes gratefully. But then she realized that she had to catch this vole; she didn't want Swiftflame to think she was a bad hunter. Plus, this was possibly the pmost plump vole she had ever seen.
Silently she dropped into a hutner's crouch, trying to remember everything Darksong had taught her. Slowly she stalked closer and closer to the vole, avoiding anything that might crunch under her paws. When she was as close as she dared she stopped, silently watching, waiting for the perfect moment. Wait, wait... now! Ashpaw lept, claws unsheathed, paws outstretched, heading directly for the vole. The vole noticed her dark shape and started to run, but Ashpaw was too fast. Within a heart-beat she had swiftly caught and killed the vole. Thank-you Starclan! She knew she would've been extremely embarressed if she ahd missed it. She let out a quiet purr and quickly buried the vole.

Moonwhisker was doing some quick patrolling near the Twoleg place, when she had realized that she had promised Swiftflame she'd go hunting with her. She cursed under her breath and had hurried back to camp. After looking around, she soon found that they had already left. She started investigation to where the could have gone. Carmeltail told her that they had gone to the forest to hunt. Moonwhisker trusted the she-cat, so off she'd gone. And here she was.
Moonwhisker had caught their scent quickly, and finally found that the two cats had already started hunting without her. She slowed down and was quick enough to see Ashpaw catch a very nice vole. "Great catch Ashpaw!" she meowed, pausing to catch her breath. "Sorry I'm late, I was patrolling and I lost track of time."

Ashpaw turned around to see the Ivoryclan deputy; she had not even noticed her arrival. "Thank-you Moonwhisker. And don't worry about it, as you can see we've started without you." Ashpaw couldn't help but feel proud of herself, she had earned praise from the deputy! But she didn't want to look like she was boasting, so she kept quiet. If I would've known she was watching I never would have caught it! I would have been to nervous.
Ashpaw didn't mention that though, she had caught the vole and could feed her clan, and even though praise felt great, she knew that that was the real reason they were out there. She looked around with her icy blue eyes at the forest, absorbing every inch of detail. This was what Ashpaw loved the most about her life in Ivoryclan, being out in the forest. And with two older, well-respected warriors too! She let her gaze drift around just a moment more, and then snapped herself back to reality.
Lifting her head, and opening her mouth to taste the air, she caught the scent of a mouse in the undergrowth. She was about to drop back into a hunter's crouch when she realized she should let one of the other cats catch it. So instead she sat back down, and pretended not to notice the delicous piece of prey.

Ashpaw looked very pleased with herself. But Moonwhisker would have as well. She remembered when Patchstar had complimented her hunting when she was an apprentice. She'd been so proud, and she'd boasted to all the other apprentices. Rainclaw had scolded her of course. Well, back then Rainclaw was Rainpaw and there was a lot more peace in IvoryClan.
"You're welcome," she said, then scented a mouse. When she saw neither Ashpaw or Swiftflame try to catch it, she figured she would. She got into a hunter's crouch and caught it with ease. She buried it, "Done and done," she said.

Ashpaw watched intently as Moonwhisker caught and killed the mouse. Her eyes widened when she saw the ease with which the clan deputy caught her prey. Momentarily she wondered if she would ever be that good. Of course I will, she told herself, I just need lots of practice, and now would be a good time for that.
She opened her mouth, hoping to catch the scent of a mouse or a vole, searching for seeds in the undergrowth. But instead her nose indicated another scent, that of a thrush who hadn't yet noticed the presence of the clan cats. Ashpaw hesitated for a moment, she had never caught a bird before. Was it the same as catching prey that didn't know how to fly? She checked to see if Swiftflame or Moonwhisker seemed to be going after the bird, but they didn't appear to be interested. So, she went for it herself.
She dropped into a hunters crouch, and silently stalked forward. She held her breath, not daring to make any sound that might alert the thrush. She was not exactly keen on embaressing herself in front of the clan deputy. But before she could get close enough she heard a crunch from beneath her paws and the bird immedietly let out a cry of alarm before flying away, far beyond her reach. Ashpaw felt her head droop, just a bit, but then lifted it back up. She didn't want the other warriors to see the dissapointment that clouded her mind.

Moonwhisker sat back. She scented a trust, but didn't make a move. She wondered if Ashpaw would be able to catch it. Moonwhisker wasn't that good at catching birds, except seagulls of course. Seagulls were the stupidest birds out there. You could stand right in front of them and they'd only beg you for food. They didn't taste that good, but Seagulls were great when the Clan was in need for food.
Ashpaw went for the bird, as expected. She also didn't catch it. "Good try," Moonwhisker meowed, hoping to give the apprentice more confidence. "Remember that birds like the thrust are very--" she paused, trying to to think of a good word, "touchy, I guess. You have to be so extremely careful. Trusts can sense even the most delicate and graceful breath," she meowed.

Ashpaw tried not to look to dissapointed. There will always be more birds, she reminded herself. "I think I like mice better. They're easy to catch." Ashpaw tried to sound funny, but she thought it sounded prettly lame. She looked around the forest, absorbing the sights and sounds of the forest that alwaysa calmed her nerves. "But I can learn to catch birds too." she stated determinedly. I have to, she told herself, So I can feed my clan!

As Swiftflame sat silently, watching the young apprentice stumble slowly through the path of learning that would lead her to become a loyal and fearsome warrior, she felt warmth spread through her pelt, regardless of the rainclouds gathering overhead. Apprentices and warriors interacting, slowly learning from their mistakes; this was what made belonging to IvoryClan so rewarding. Her train of thought was broken as a twig snapped in front of her, and Ashpaw missed the thrush she has been chasing by a heartbeat. She felt a twinge of sympathy as disappointment flashed across the apprentices face. Moonwhisker's constructive criticism had its effect, however, and Ashpaw seemed determined to redeem herself in the deputy's eyes. Her opportunity came as a cool breeze, driven by the gathering storm clouds ahead, frightened two mice from their refuge in the undergrowth. Tiny scampering footsteps across the dry leaves underfoot, and she knew that the others would have heard. One headed directly for Swiftflame, as the other scampered off towards Ashpaw. With practiced skill, Swiftflame darted towards her prey and killed it with practiced efficiency. Before glancing to see if Ashpaw had faired as well as she, Swiftflame drew in the warm scent of her prey. Immediately, she knew something was wrong. The scent of mouse was almost entirely masked by the deep, sour smell of poisoned sickness.

Ashpaw noticed the two mice as well, and brightened as she noticed that one of them seemed to be heading directly to wards her. I can catch this one, she thought to herself confidently. She dropped into a hunters crouch but hesitated as she noticed a strange scent in the air. She tried to ignore it and focused on the mouse again, quickly catching and killing it in one swift motion. But as she started to bury it the scent came back and almost overwhelmed her. She narrowed her eyes in disgust, "What is that?"[/i She was hoping one of the older warriors would recognize the stench. She couldn't help remembering the last time she had smelled something strange, only to find a horrible badger lurking in the woods. She hoped no one else noticed the brief panic that crossed her face, but at least this didn't s mell like badger...

Moonwhisker laughed. She sat back and watched Swiftflame take a turn hunting for a mouse. She gave a nod to Swiftflame as if to say, Good job! as the she-cat caught the mouse with ease. Then Swiftflame got a confused look on her face as she smelled the mouse.
"What is that?"
Moonwhisker caught a sniff of the horrible odor. She held up her tail, "Twoleg poison, its deadly. Just like deathberries," she meowed in disgust. "Don't touch it with your mouth, we need to get rid of it. If you have a wound don't let the mouse near it." she paused, thinking of where the could get rid of it. "We should probably move it out of our territory. Then we need to tell Patchstar," she meowed. As deputy, it was in her instinct to take charge of the situation.

Ashpaw nodded her head, dissapointed that the mouse she had caught could not feed the clan. She sniffed it cautiously and wrinkled her nose at the foul odor. "How do we know the other mice aren't poisoned?" A chill ran down her spine as she thought of some oblivious cat eating the foul smelling mouse. She gingerly picked it up with her claw, trying to keep it away from the rest of her body. "Where should I bring it?"

"We should probably move it out of our territory, then we need to tell Patchstar."
"Where should I bring it?"
Moonwhisker and Ashpaw worriedly debated what to do about the illness that may have already spread into the clan, and missed nothing except for what should have worried them most. Swiftflame's limbs were growing numb with the fiery pain that had spread there in a matter of moments, and a dark cloud was descending over her bulging eyes. She had no strength to fight the sickness, to stand, or even to call out for help. All she could manage was a faint moan before the crushing wave or darkness and pain enveloped her. Swiftflame lay motionless on the ground, and still was seen by no one but the poisoned mouse on the ground whose fate she would soon share if she was not seen.

Ashpaw had been too busy trying to figure out how to move the mouse off the territory without coming in contact with the sickness to pay attention to Swiftflame. But when she heard a groan she turned her head and then dropped her jaw in horror as the flame colored warrior collapsed. "Wh-what should we do? Does this ean she's infected? Should I go get Arcticpool?"
Ashpaw didn't want anything to happen to Swiftflame, she had tried to befriend Ashpaw, and Ashpaw couldn't help but respect her for that. Without knowing what to do she turned toward Moonwhisker. Moonwhisker was the deputy, so she had to know what was wrong, right?

"Lets see, we should probably--" Moonwhisker was cut off by a groan coming from Swiftflame. She shuddered, thinking the worst. She turned, and her hypothesis was indeed correct. "Swiftflame!" she yowled, her childhood friend was laying motionless on the ground.
"Wh-what should we do? Does this mean she's infected? Should I go get Arcticpool?"
All Moonwhisker wanted to do was cry and hide in a corner, but the behavior was not acceptable. She gulped, "Go get Arcticpool," she paused, then added "And hurry up too! Her fate may rest in your fast feet!"
