The first thing Mothflight did when he entered camp was check that Darksong wasn't around. He must have either been sleeping or out, for there was no sign of him. Mothflight breathed a sigh of relief; he could do what he wanted.
He wanted to talk with Patchstar. He was still in disbelief about what he had heard Risingdawn and Snowsong say about him. Mothflight wouldn't have said a word if Darksong had said it, but then again that was his brother and didn't want to get him in trouble.
Mothflight padded over to Patchstar's den and called to him, "Patchstar, sir, may I have a word?" He prayed the leader wouldn't immediately associate him with Darksong.

Patchstar had, as per usual, been playing host to daydreams when he heard the voice from outside the den. His father had been speaking with him; telling him stories about the good old days, and giving him advice on what to do about the Clan these days.
But then the other cat had to go and interrupt it.
"Patchstar, sir, may I have a word?"
The fat tom sighed and dropped his voice; Redstar had -- sounding rather reluctant -- advised him to speak quietly when other cats might hear. "Do I have to go talk to him, Daddy?"
Sigh. Yes, Pat. You're the leader; cats depend on your every word, remember? He might very well, oh -- think he can't hunt somewhere unless you tell him to. A pause. I'll wait around.
"Oh. That's bad. Okay, as long as you stay close." With a loud sigh, the tom heaved himself to his paws, going to see who had interrupted him.
It was a tortoiseshell tom. Patchstar didn't remember his name, but recognized him vaguely as a senior warrior; it the one who spent time with that Darksong cat, the black tom who liked to insult him. Patchstar's eyes narrowed slightly, but the tom had certainly been respectful enough. "Yes, what do you need?"

It looked as though Patchstar was a bit suspicious of him, much to Mothflight's dismay. It hadn't been long since Darksong had spoken to Patchstar and he must know they're related. "I was out in the forest and overheard Risingdawn and Snowsong talking." He explained, "They were talking about when Risingdawn's father was exiled."

Oh. It was camp gossip. Patchstar had lost a lot of interest in it lately -- it didn't help that a lot of the cats who'd used to report it to him were now mysteriously whispering to the ones who started the gossip in the first place. He stifled a yawn, wondering what this could have to do with him.
"Who and who?" he asked offhandedly. "I don't remember that particular exile."

"Apparently, Goldensun rejected Risingdawn and his father got angry about it and complained to you." That was how Mothflight understood it, and he hoped Patchstar would recall this particular incident, "He started a shouting match with you, thus you exiled him." He felt like he was just dancing around what he really wanted to tell the leader, so he said it...
"I overheard Risingdawn and Snowsong bad mouthing you repeatedly, saying that there was no cat they hated more and that you were going crazy." Mothflight shook a bit as he spoke, nervous as to what Patchstar's response would be.

Patchstar's eyes narrowed thoughtfully at Mothflight's description. "Ambersomething," he muttered, tail twitching. "Amberfur or Ambertail or something. I remember him. Disrespectful little traitor."
"I overheard Risingdawn and Snowsong bad mouthing you repeatedly, saying that there was no cat they hated more and that you were going crazy."
Patchstar let out a soft, inadvertent hiss at the senior warrior's explanation; his tail lashed again, once, and he glared at the tom who had imparted this suddenly crucial bit of gossip. His eyes narrowed -- and suddenly the old Patchstar was shining through, the one who cared what his Clan said about him.
"They said what?" he snapped, staring Mothflight down as though the warrior had said those things himself; the leader didn't seem to notice Mothflight's fear in the least. "Tell me exactly what they said, those little..."

Mothflight did feel a bit of guilt for turning them in, but what else was he going to do? He respected Patchstar greatly and felt he had a right to know, "Well, Risingdawn said there is no cat he hates more and Snowsong said that you don't have what it takes to be leader." What the cats had said didn't really make sense in Mothflight's mind. Sure, Patchstar was a bit off, but who wasn't?

"Did they." Patchstar's eyes narrowed, in thought this time; already some -- fairly creative -- "punishments" for these cats' comments were running through his mind. "That's disrespectful of them...they're undermining me. You -- uh --" He fished for the cat's name, and finally remembered it. "Mothflight. Remind me who these cats are, exactly; what they look like, why they matter apart from those -- comments -- of theirs."

"Well, Risingdawn is a ginger tabby and I often see him with his sister, Silverdust. He's not a very......talented warrior." That was the best way Mothflight could describe him. "And Snowsong has a white pelt. Her bloodline is quite shifty, and she seems to keep to herself most of the time." He didn't really know Snowsong that well, but he had heard things about her.

"I...see."
Patchstar stared past Mothflight, distant, thinking. He remembered Risingdawn now, vaguely; remembered how foolish the tom had been when his father was exiled. An absolute wreck, over one little exile, when it could have been his whole family! Ruined because he thought he loved a she-cat, as though it could ruin him when there was no love anyway. Yes -- his sister was fiery, but he was easy to break.
And if the best way to do it was through a she-cat --
-- and that she-cat was as much to blame as he --
-- and that she-cat already had a shady reputation --
Everything clicked together into one astonishingly simple plan.
"Yes," Patchstar said, with a soft hiss of satisfaction, "I see. Perhaps Miss Snowsong and I will have a little chat sometime. I commend you for your loyalty to me, Mothflight. I'll remember this the next time I give cats rewards."

Mothflight was a bit worried about exactly what would happen to Risingdawn and Snowsong. Then again, he couldn't just let them say things like that. Sure, he let Darksong complain about Patchstar all the time and never said a word, but that was different. He needed to watch out for his family.
He bowed and said, "Thank you, sir."

OOc;{Yep.}
Patchstar nodded his head shortly, a clear dismissal, and turned back to his den, mind racing. As soon as he was sure Mothflight was out of earshot, he spoke to the shadows, softly.
"I'm back, Papa, but let's not finish that story now...I have things to think about."
You know that you'll make enemies by doing this. You don't have to have enemies; you can stay here in your den with me.
"Nuh-uh. I'm going back, Papa. They obviously have no idea what they're doing without me."
