Darksong wasn't in a very good mood. Maybe it was because Mothflight was threatening to disown him, or that he was told to do an apprentice's job. It was probably that he was told to bring freshkill to one certain elder he was actually a bit afraid of: Carmeltail. He cursed the current lack of apprentices.
He knew she would say rude things to him, but it was worse that Darksong couldn't do it right back to her. It wasn't because he wanted to respect his elder, no, but that he wanted to be on good terms with Rainclaw's mother.
Choosing a plump vole from the freshkill pile, Darksong padded over to the Elder's Den. He took a deep breath and stepped inside. He walked to Carmeltail and dropped the vole in front of her, "Hello, Carmeltail."

Carmeltail had been in a deep sleep when she was interrupted by a cat. Carmeltail groaned, turning over and opening her eyes slowly. Darksong.
"Thanks a lot, and what do you want anyway," she meowed in disgust. Although Carmeltail didn't really approve of Rainclaw having a mate, she was at least a bit happy that she'd chosen Darksong. Darksong was evil, scheming, and mean. Perfect.
But she didn't like the idea of mates in general. To her, all toms were the same. They'd pretend to love you then leave right when a better cat came along. Well, thats what Almondpelt had done.

"I was just bringing you some freshkill. We're so low on apprentices that I have to do this stupid stuff...." Darksong could already tell this was going badly. He thought about just leaving right now, but something made him stay there and try to have a conversation.
"I sometimes wonder if it's not that we don't have enough apprentices, but that it's they're so lazy." After he said it, he realized it sounded like something Rainclaw would say. She always complained about the apprentices. Darksong rarely did, but it did bother him when he had to do their jobs.

"Thank you," Carmeltail meowed, then realized that she'd said something that appeared to be nice. So she added, "for waking me up at least. And I'm not hungry."
Carmeltail looked up quickly. "Holy StarClan," she meowed, "You sounded like Rainclaw," she said, blinking the surprise from her face. "You two remind me of myself when I was young. Young and stupid."

"Well, sorry. I was told to do this now, so blame Patchstar." Darksong couldn't believe he was apologizing for something. He normally wouldn't, even if it was his fault.
The word stupid stung. He really, REALLY wanted to say something horribly rude back. He just told himself she didn't really mean, and asked, "You did a lot of stupid things when you were young?"

"Hah, Patchstar," she meowed letting a laugh escape her mouth. She lowered her voice, "If you ask me Patchstar is off his rocker. Even StarClan can't save that nutty cat. He's about my age, you know."
She laughed again at Darksong's question. "Of course. I've done my share of bad things, and I've made many stupid decisions, like Alm--" she stopped herself. "Like once I snuck out of camp."

Darksong hadn't heard anyone say Patchstar was sane yet (well, besides Mothflight occasionally), so he wasn't surprised at what Carmeltail said. He was a bit confused when she started to say a name and then stopped. He then remembered that Rainclaw said she didn't know who he father was. Figuring it was an issue she'd rather not speak of, he ignored it.
Darksong had never really snuck out of camp before, besides with Rainclaw. He was suppose to be staying at camp because of his wounds from a badger attack. "Really? I've never really done much for bad things except being disrespectful and rude." He said with a chuckle.

Carmeltail chuckled at his comment. "You better not be rude to Rainclaw or I'll have to kill you," she said. She meant it to be a joke, she wasn't really going to kill him. She couldn't.
It wasn't that she wasn't capable of it though. Carmeltail's stomach gave a loud grumble, and she realized that she was indeed very hungry. She grabbed the rabbit that Darksong had brought her and she took a few bites of it, chewing the meat quickly.

Since Carmeltail was chuckling, Darksong figured she was joking when she threatened him, "Nah, I wouldn't be rude to Rainclaw....unless of course she was rude first." He said and smirked. He was surprised to see her actually eating the prey he had brought. He figured it would just sit there and then someone would yell at him about it later.

Carmeltail nodded, "You might be alright Darksong. I never liked toms, but you- you might be ok," she meowed. Her words surprised even her. She stopped eating the rabbit. "I'll save this for Jaywing so she doesn't accidentally eat one of Snowdrift's kits," she said.

Darksong was relieved to hear that Carmeltail approved of him. He was, however, curious as to why she hated tom cats. He figured that she wouldn't answer him, but asked, "What, did a tom cat you liked do something stupid?" He also chuckled at the mention of Jaywing. If Patchstar had told him to feed that thing instead of Carmeltail he defiantly would of refused.

Carmeltail snorted. "Idiotic, more like it. Almondpelt was an idiot," she meowed, only then realizing she just jeopardized her whole entire life. "And don't mention that to anyone or I'll claw you," she added, trying to redeem herself.

Almondpelt? The name rung a bell in Darksong's mind. He tried to drag memories up from his kithood, but nothing significant about that cat came up. He knew the name, and knew he died. He really wanted to ask Carmeltail more, just for curiousity's sake. He didn't though, "Don't worry about it, I won't."

"Tell who about what?"
Carmeltail groaned, it was Moonwhisker. "None of your business," she meowed.
Moonwhisker shrugged. "Ok then, anyways-- Oh! Hi Darksong, just the two cats I was looking for," she meowed nodding her head in greeting to both cats. Carmeltail rolled her eyes.
Moonwhisker looked around, her eyes scanning the elder's den, obviously looking for something. "You guys haven't seen any kits around, have you? I can't seem to find them..." her voice trailed off.

Darksong absolutely hated Moonwhisker. He wanted to get up and leave as soon as he saw her. Since she mentioned kits were missing, he just had to throw in, "You sure Jaywing didn't eat them?" He chuckled as he spoke and glanced over at Carmeltail.
Then he gave a more serious answer (sort of), "If I were a kit, I know I wouldn't stay in camp if given the chance to sneak out. Have you checked the sands and nearby forest?"
