History.
Redstar was the leader of IvoryClan before Patchstar. He took his mate, Swiftfeet, by force and blackmail; she was a sad sort of soul, and passed away of old age and sickness before her mate. He had four kits -- Talonfall, Fleetrunner, Patchpelt and Fireclaws -- and the four of them spent much time warring over his succession. He did very little of much importance during his reign, but ruled with an iron claw -- until, on his deathbed, he began seeing visions of his lost mate Swiftfeet, pleading for him to come to his senses and do what was right for his Clan. Something in these visions wrung out his shriveled heart, and at the last he acceded to his dead mate's wishes, naming his weakest kit Patchpelt the new leader of the Clan. This honest repentance gained him admission to StarClan on his death. |
Talonfall was born son of Redstar, brother of the current leader Patchstar. He was a very ambitious and cunning young tom, who was quite intentionally very popular with the Clan, particularly those who weren't aware of the backstabbing and feuding going on among the ruling cats. For a time it all seemed perfect; he would win Shimmersoul, the mate of his dreams, and the leadership he'd been raised to covet since birth. But then -- it all went wrong. Redstar, going mad at the end of his life, named weak chubby Patchpelt his heir. Worse, his mate decided that she loved his brother better than she -- that same Patchpelt he so despised! Furious, the ambitious warrior set in action a plan. He drew Shimmersoul aside and threatened her unless she would kill the leader-to-be. However, this plot was discovered the night of its action and Shimmersoul revealed who had set her up; Talonfall was thus condemned and set to a battle to the death -- for the leadership and the she-cat -- with his brother. Talonfall was arrogant, certain he would win -- but in the end it was neither he nor Patchpelt who struck the killing blow, but his own sister Fleetrunner, desiring to make up for the fact that she, too, had been unable to get past her greed for the position and might have been willing to stoop to such depths as her brother. Thus Talonfall died, in anger and lust for revenge; unrepentant for his actions and cursing StarClan with his last breath. |
Shimmersoul was a pretty young cat from a mediocre family in the Clan; for their beauty and grace alone, she and her sister became immensely popular and high-status as young warriors. Her sister Silversoul, more decisive and mature than she, took a mate before she did; Shimmersoul, on the other hand, was being courted by not just one but two sons of the leader, and could not decide which one was more flattering and better to fall in love with. In the end, however, she chose Patchpelt; Talonfall frightened her just a little sometimes, what with his deviousness and occasional flash of temper. Patchpelt was simple, exactly as he seemed, and if he wasn't exactly the smartest cat on the block he was very sweet to her. This was a mistake -- Talonfall was angry and jealous, and one dark night he blackmailed her, threatened to have her family tortured, killed even, if she didn't pretend to love him and -- worse -- outright kill her true love. Shimmersoul, never very strong and loving her sister to the death, made a desperate, heartbreaking attempt to do as ordered, but the assassination attempt was stopped partway through and in an instant the she-cat spilled her tale out to her true love. Talonfall was killed and she was able to live a happy life with her mate and leader. However, delicate as she was, she did not survive the first birthing of her kits; she died, along with her last and weakest daughter Moonkit.
Since then.
Redstar has since discovered the truth of his visions from his mate herself, and has had quite a turnaround as far as considerateness toward others is concerned; he is now taking quite an interest in the de-corruption of his Clan, interfering often in the matter although as a corrupted leader himself he has little use in the plans. | Talonfall now exists angrily in much the same place as Tigerstar from the books, which was never named and therefore must be given long sentences like this to describe. xD | Shimmersoul has receded peacefully into the background of StarClan existence, and refuses to play any part in the current plotting -- although if things are to go through, most likely her participation will be necessary very soon.

"Talon!"
He winced, almost. The name was not one he enjoyed hearing; it was so impolite, so informal. He swore to himself that one day he'd never need to let anyone use the name, would kill anyone who tried it without a second thought -- but that time was not now. Unfortunately, popular cats seemed to appreciate informality on a daily basis, and lacking status of his own, popularity seemed his only way to power.
But now -- that might just be about to change.
Instead of snapping out something rude, Talonfall turned to see who had called his nickname, false appreciation stretching over his features. It was his brother; his dear mousebrain of a brother Patchpelt, with his slightly-too-chubby earnest figure and oily black-and-white pelt. His eyes narrowed, because he wasn't really in public and his brother was an acceptable target for his annoyance, and he growled, "Don't call me that. It's rude."
"Everyone else does," his little brother shot back with something like a pout, but it was a routine response; the smaller tom's tail was lashing and worry glowed in his eyes. "Talon, Father wants to see us. Us and the other two. He --" Patchpelt's voice lowered to a whisper. "He's, you know. Not really there again."
In an instant Talon's irritation was forgotten, the heated reprimand for using his nickname again dying in his throat. He stood up from where he'd been lying out on a rock in the Waters. "What are we waiting for, then? Let's get moving!"
The dark tom hurried off in the direction of the caves, and Patchpelt flinched away when their pelts brushed together. His brother's golden-colored eyes had turned hard and glittering, like a sharp-edged piece of topaz.
A delicate young she-cat had been heading towards the rocks when she saw the commotion, and now she watched Talonfall and Patchpelt hurrying towards the dens with her pretty brow furrowed.
What could be going on...I hope it's not about Redstar again?
Shimmersoul hesitated, then bounded to close the few paces between herself and the two toms who were courting her. Patchpelt smiled at her, face brightening, but Talonfall gave her much the same look he would a particularly annoying kit and pushed the pace a little.
"What's up, boys?" she asked, concern apparent. The smaller of the toms opened his mouth to explain, but Talonfall beat him to it.
"It's nothing, Shimmersoul. Go play with the kits in the nursery or something, would you? This is important business."
Well, that was offensive. The she-cat gave the tom one of her looks, that melted about any cat's heart except his, and answered in a wounded tone of voice, "That's contradictory. Why won't you tell me what's going on, Talon?"
She caught the insolent look Patchpelt cast his brother and gave him an inquisitive one of her own, but Patchpelt just shrugged. As for Talonfall, he just made an exasperated noise and snapped, "Go back to the queens where you belong, pretty she-kit. We both know you wouldn't understand it if I tried to explain. You and your sister both, you've got nothing but your own looks in those pretty heads of yours, haven't you? Go on!"
And that was both offensive and hurtful. Shimmersoul dropped back behind the two, holding back tears. Patchpelt hesitated, looking apologetic, but the older tabby nudged him pointedly and with more than a little force. He sighed, mouthed 'I'll explain later,' and went along with her brother.
The only time I'll ever be mates with that monster is when he becomes leader, and only then if he promises to keep Mother, Father and Silversoul safe. And for some reason, that was an oddly satisfying thought.
Talonfall and Patchpelt were the last to arrive to what was clearly their father's deathbed. Their siblings, the heavy-pawed tom Fireclaws and his slim sister Fleetrunner, cast them disdainful looks as they took their places near the edge of Redstar's mossy nest. Strange, Talonfall thought idly, how he never felt his mother's absence so clearly as when the five of them came together.
Redstar apparently thought differently.
The ginger-and-white tom's voice was low and hoarse as he began to speak, audible evidence of the fever that was killing him, and they all leaned closer to hear what he had to say. "My kits," he rasped, with an odd sort of affection, "my kits, how you've grown. It's been so long...been so long since I've seen us as a family. I'm -- sorry."
That was a bit odd. Talonfall cast his siblings a covert, questioning glance; Fleetrunner matched it with one of her own, and Patchpelt, ever the innocent, was glowing with happiness at his father's words. Fireclaws wasn't paying attention to his brother and didn't notice the look.
"I'm going to die." Redstar's first words were loud, as if he wasn't entirely aware of the volume of his own voice; the next few were quieter. "You know that. Of course you know that. Even as I speak you're watching each other like hungry jackals, wondering who's going to get the biggest share of the hunt. I know. I was the same. I'm -- sorry." Again the strange comments. The older tom coughed, rasping. "So now I'm going to name my successor."
Suddenly the air was full of tension; singing with it. In a moment Patchpelt and Fireclaws were forgotten, and Talonfall's attention was swinging between his father and his eldest sister. Fleetrunner, too, was casting him veiled glances, and he knew she was thinking the same thing he was. Wondering what she'd do if he became leader, how she'd properly dispose of him, how she'd cover up the incident and make sure she became leader. Patchpelt and Fireclaws seemed to forget their own status and chances, as well, and watched the both of their siblings warily instead of each other.
None of them were expecting Redstar's next words.
"Patchpelt, I want you to take my place. It's...the least I can do for -- your mother. She wants it so."
All four of them stared at him, jaws dropping. Talonfall couldn't think. Patchpelt? Patchpelt? His pudgy useless ignoramus brother, leader? A red rage was overcoming him, possessing his soul, and he coldly watched his father's body go lifeless and limp even as his brother ran excitedly out of the den. Heard him talking through a furious roaring in his ears. Talking to his future mate.
"Guess what Shimi! I'm going to be leader!"
And it was at that point that something inside him snapped.
