Silverstripe stretched and sauntered off to the fresh-kill pile. He was ready for Dewpaw's first day as an apprentice. He had heard that most of the other apprentices had been going out much earlier, but Silverstripe didn't care. A rested apprentice would do better, and none of the other apprentices would get in their way. She would also be eager to learn - if they went hunting or whatever as soon as they woke up there was no anticipation. Once you had built the anticipation, the learning would be faster and better. He flicked his tail impatiently, then took a mouse out of the pile next to him. He might as well give himself something to do while he waited. Eating, he peered up at the sky. It was not quite sunhigh - he would wait. But if he was still waiting by the time he finished this mouse, he was going to find her.

Dewpaw had been dreaming. It'd been a nice dream, well better than nice. A huge grin was plastered on Dewpaw's face as she opened her eyes to greet the nursery. But the she remember, she wasn't a kit anymore. She was an apprentice! In her dream she'd been a warrior, and her leg had healed perfectly. It'd been nice.
But all in all, she didn't really mind. She functioned well enough. Plus, there were worse off cats. She got up and stretched her legs, noticing the lack of apprentices. She figured they would be out hunting or training. "Oh dear..." she muttered, realizing how late it actually was. Silverstripe was probaly waiting for her.
She gave her fur a shake and hurried out of the den to see Silverstripe. She hurried over to him, "Hey Silverstripe, ready to train?" she asked hopefully.

"Yes. Have you eaten yet?" Silverstripe hoped she had. He was anxious to start his first session with his first apprentice, and he felt sure that Dewpaw would think so too. But it was only fair to give her a chance to get some food in her stomach.

Dewpaw shook her head. "No not yet, but I will now quickly," she meowed. She hurried over to the fresh kill pile, grabbing a small vole and gulping it down fast enough to not make herself choke.
She paraded back over to Silverstripe, "Ok, now I'm ready. What are we gonna do today?" she asked hopefully. Maybe they would hunt, or patrol! Whatever they did Dewpaw was really looking forward to it.

"Well, I think we'll start with your hunting skills today, then we'll go through fighting moves once you're a fair hunter. Let's head for the forest, now that you've eaten." Silverstripe's enthusiasm was no less than Dewpaw's. He led the way to the camp wall and waited for Dewpaw before he spoke. "We'll have to be careful once we're past here. Twolegs love to visit the Sands, so go as quietly as you can once we're past the camp wall. Ready?"

Dewpaw smiled and followed the senior cat out of camp. She was practically skipping with joy. This was the day all kits dreamed of, all apprentices remembered, and all the warriors wish they could go back to.
"We'll have to be careful once we're past here. Twolegs love to visit the Sands, so go as quietly as you can once we're past the camp wall. Ready?"
Dewpaw nodded as she caught up with Silverstripe. She made sure to make her pawsteps as light and quiet as she could. Following her mentor again, they made their was to the sands.

Silverstripe was pleased with how silently his apprentice was walking. Granted it wasn't perfect, but if her hunter's crouch was as good as this, prey would have to watch out. They stayed close to the cliff and managed to sneak past without attracting the Twolegs' attention. They climbed up to the forest and relaxed in the shady darkness for a moment. Silverstripe turned to his apprentice. "Let's keep walking. Once you think we're deep enough in the forest, tell me what you can scent."
